GLASS

My experience with the seduction of glass began with a one day class given by an ex-fashion model who had a degree in geology. She began to unearth the history of glass beginning with naturally occuring Obsidian. As she described its appearance, as meteors of volcanic blood spurting into the sky, as if from a punctured molten subterranean artery, I thought what an appropriate and rich field of study for any artist, but in particular those who worked in the media of glass. I also thought at that time, which came first for her, glass then geology or vice versa? During a demonstration she showed us how to fuse glass by making little 'sandwiches' of multi colored, textured, and transparent glass. All held in place with Vaseline. Similar to demonstrations on the food channel, she skipped the oven and showed us the finished products. Oooohs and ahhhhs as if the results could be consumed through our mouths. Alas we had to be content with gobbling them up with our eyes. I was hooked and ready to experiment.
